Yes, it's normal. How did you think VARYING worked? The run-time needs some way of tracking the current length of VARYING length data. It does that by having the compiler generate code to store the current length in the first 2 bytes (or optionally at VRM610 in the first 4 bytes).

I can se this in the CL program that i Call.


You have three choices:

1) Only pass VARYING parameters to a language that can handle them
2) Convert VARYING to fixed-length before passing
3) In the language that does not have native support for VARYING you must add code to handle it programmatically. Easy enough with sub- string support.

NOTE: It is generally NOT necessary to use %TRIM on VARYING fields.
