Of course, an unnecessary focus on database independence at the expense of performance could be considered a poor design decision. I'm not sure why you capitalize the term; it's simply one more in a long list of things to be considered when designing a system.

SQL has its place, but it's far from everywhere, especially on i5/OS with its rich spectrum of tools. If you have no intention on moving off of i5/OS, then *not* taking advantage of the native capabilities is architecturally negligent.
