Why?

I often see this. For example CHGPWD. Why does it need to know your
password when you obviously had to enter it previously? Perhaps because
they didn't want the login person walking away from the computer and some
passerby changing their password. Seems to be a generally accepted
practice because Windows does the same thing.
Maybe they also wanted a verification on certain critical issues, like,
are you really freaking sure that you are going to price that product for
1/3 of our cost?

Prompting for the user is silly on a green screen application as a SysCtl
3 (ShiftEsc 3 on many PC keyboards) will show you the job information and
determining the user is a no brainer.

Your suggestion of ?CHKPWD is a good one. For user id and password then
the profile handle API will do it although at a significantly higher
development cost.
