Another alternative is to not maintain a pointer to the head of the linked list. For operations like getParent() and getChild(), your service program only needs to know the element that the caller is currently working with.

If you really want to be able to get back to the first element easily, another option would be to have the caller pass a 'custTree' data structure which has two pointers, one pointing to the first element and one pointing to the 'current' element.
