The latest PTFs relating to V5R4 pointer support in CL are the following
ones:

SI28620, SI28196, SI27953

Note that these PTFs fix bugs in the compiler. Any programs that were compiled prior to applying the PTFs, need to be recompiled to pick up the updates.

Once you've done that, a declared pointer will start with a value of null -- so to check for a null pointer, just declare a pointer named "&NULL" and don't assign it any value. Then compare against &NULL.

Chuck,

I can't seem to locate the specific PTF, but before leaving IBM I
found that CL was picking up residual values for uninitialized
pointers. I reported the problem and CL was fixed so that a declared
pointer, that is not set to a value, is initialized to NULL. So for
ILE CL I simply declare a &NULL_PTR TYPE(*PTR) and use it for NULL
comparisions.
