I need both files open together because I have to back out some changesdone
to the production file. If I renamed input the the actual file name Iwould
have access to the fields but i would have it defined twice in theprogram.
doing an ovrdbf might be the only option if i cant get to the fields inthe
file by just using extfile/extmbr.list

I am curious why you need it opened twice? However, could you leave
"input" as usropn, and do an ovrdbf to "mvmndb"?
