I've always read/chained/setll, etc on the file name, now moreso because of
the %EOF %FOUND, etc bifs that I also qualify with the filename. Whenever I
see this type of operation on the format name, for some reason it makes my
skin crawl. But I don't know why.. lol

As for write and update, I use the record format name.

Again, as far as why, who knows. But, I betcha 5 dallas you'll get PLENTY
of opinion on this... lol

Subject: read/chain record format or file name?

When performing a Read or Chain operation, is best practices to reference
the record format name or the file name? Why?

I know what I do. I have seen commercial software do both. I have seen
individual programmers do both.

The reason I pose the question is I am teaching a class in RPG (/free, if
you care) at a community college this semester and prefer to teach best
practices from the start.

Your thoughts?

TIA

Thank you,
- Jim
