You're right - I forgot the fact that the "|" had to be added after the actual content.

Varying length is still the right way to go however to minimize the time spent trimming - then you really only need the second trim.

Yes, I liked that suggestion (point 3 in your original post). I didn't realize that concatenation with a VARYING field worked like that. Could come in handy in the future.
