As usual, it's hard to top Simon's explanation. I will add this.
I whipped up a quick SQL stored procedure to dump a million records into
two files. One had 5 date fields. One had five 10 character alpha
fields.
After reading Simon's response there was no need to go any further so I
aborted the program. It had already written several records

Oops, apparently my loop counter had an error. Should have stopped at a
million rows! Glad I didn't fill the system!
