There's also the issue that it may well make sense to use STATIC on very
large character fields, to improve runtime performance; for instance, if
you're using a field only as a receiver variable in a procedure, there's no
point in initializing it when the procedure is invoked, since that just
wastes time. It can be a surprisingly large amount of time. There was an
article about this recently on the SystemiNetwork, I think.
