I agree with this. Furthermore, one premise of the MVC design pattern is that if your method of handling database I/O changes (switching from SQL to record level access, for example) the necessary changes are isolated in just one module. Why force a change to the control module too?
However, how likely is it that your method of handling database I/O is going to change? It may be better to just choose one design and apply it across the board, whatever the design may be.
