The next step is to make sure that the EXACT same SQL returns the exact same
results. That is, hardcode the statement entirely. Type in this

C/EXEC SQL SELECT COUNT(*) INTO :MYVAR FROM SLSTRNL5
C+ WHERE SLTDAT >20070722 AND SLTDAT <= 20070801
C+ AND SLSHRT=' ' AND SLCLAS > 1 AND SLACCT = 10103900
C/END-EXEC

Execute it and see if the value is zero or 20. If it's zero, then your
environment is out of whack. If it's 20, your substitution variables are
incorrect.

And yes, I think the colon throws off the debugger.

Yes it does, 20 which is what I would have expected.

Why does the system not return a value when I F11 on :CUSTNO even though
it
is supposed to be the same as CUSTNO; I assume the ':' throws the debugger
off, am I correct?
