You set up the type and size of the parms in the prototype for the subprocedure. Use the same prototype in the caller and you've got no issues.

When passing parms between programs, we typically pass them as
character types and do the conversion inside the program; this is to
avoid the nuances with programs and how they receive and parse the
parms.

Do I need to be concerned with this as it relates to passing parms to
a sub-procedure is or will its internal parameter validation handle
this automatically?

Probably not. It would probably be created as a module with
CRTRPGMOD, and then bound into a program or service program.
