If you simply have:

D FileNameDS e ds extname(Filename)

then you can simply do a READ and the FileNameDS data-structure will be
automatically filled (because the subfield name are the same):

/free
read(en) FileName;
/end-free

This doesn't work if you specify QUALIFIED for the DS, of course.

Scott and others will probably say that using Likerec is better than using
ExtName, but it doesn't make any difference if you're talking about a
single-record-format file with no null-capable fields or anything like
that (which the *vast* majority of database files are). And ExtName is
backwards-compatible back to V4R5 :-)
