Getting in a little late in this discussion but I wonder if you could
not use SED (Unix Stream Editor) to make the changes you need?
I have used SED in the past to do some pretty powerful things.
Ran this in qsh and it seemed to work.
$
echo day | sed s/day/night/
night
$
