And just to make it more confusing, the File Descriptions mentioned so far
makes the file update capable. It does not necessarily mean the file is
actually updated. You would need to look for Update, Delete or Write against
either the actual filename, or the format name (found by doing a DSPFD against
the file).

Also check that SQL isn't being used for any updates. Look for source members
with a Type of "SQLRPGLE" or "SQLRPG". Then look for SQL statements within the
source of INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE.

Hope this helps.

Regards,
Terry

Oh, good point...

Should add this:

Position 20 (File Addition)
Position 20 indicates whether records are to be added to an input or update
file.
For output files, this entry is ignored.
Entry Explanation
Blank No records can be added to an input or update file (I or U in position
17).
A Records are added to an input or update file when positions 18 through 20
of the output record specifications for the file contain ″ADD″, or when
the
WRITE operation code is used in the calculation specification.

HTH,

Charles

Guy,

IF = input, full procedural
UF = update, full procedural
O = output

Warning: if it has IF A, you can also write to it!

Subject
Really basic question - File Description

My programmer is on holiday, otherwise I'd ask him...

I would like to see which of our program updates a file on
our iSeries.
If I use WRKMBRPDM and search all our rpg source I see lots of
references to it like this

FNAME IF E K DISK

But in the program I think updates it I see

FNAME O E K DISK

Hopefully, the O tells me something helpful - like this
program writes
to this file?
What do IF and UF (which I've also seen) mean, and are they any other
common definitions?

Thanks

Guy
