I think I'd steer clear of using SQL to check if a
record exists in this case.

I may as well. I just "think" in SQL, not RLA so that's my baseline. IF
(and it's an IF) you could rework the original query that loads the
subfile to be SQL based then including the check in the base query would
(I'd bet) be faster than doing a lookup for each row in the subfile. But
if that isn't done I'd stick with a SETLL to check for the rows. In
either case, it should be nearly instantaneous to lookup 50 rows, even
in a 2-5 mill row table.

BTW, my testing turned up a strange statistics fact (on V5R2) that I'll
post in another thread.
