We ran into a similar issue last year where we were sending a request to a server via a socket from the AS400 and receiving a reply back through the socket. The actual data began at random places, and a free packet sniffer confirmed this. The funny thing is that when sending the same request from a Windows program, no problem was seen. I believe (don't take it as gospel) that when I used Ethereal, I was able to see that there are some optional header fields in the IP header spec that were being populated by the server. We weren't taking that into account, and as such, it was mucking up the data we saw. I'd second the notion to use Ethereal to check to see if the Optional Parameters of the IP header are being populated -- I think you will find that they are. From there, I think all you have to do is alter your offset for the return data. It's been about 8 months since I had to deal with this, so I can't be more specific. The memory just isn't working today.

Never had that problem. Presuming you are up to date on PTFs, I suggest you run Ethereal on the line to see if the sender is pushing garbage to you or if you are 'hearing' phantom characters in error. Ethereal is a packet sniffer.
