Anyone who has tried to change a database field to be unicode instead of character or DBCS has discovered how annoying it is to have to specify %UCS2/%CHAR/%GRAPH whenever the field is used with other data. The RPG compiler has relaxed some of the rules regarding using UCS2 with character and DBCS data; this change is available through V5R3 and V5R4 PTFs. Not all the rules have been relaxed; the change only affects assignment and comparison operations, and initialization of UCS2 fields. This article gives some details: http://www.ibmsystemsmag.com/i5/Jan07/Developer Here are the PTFs: v5r3m0 tgtrls(*current): SI24532 v5r4m0 tgtrls(*current): SI26312 v5r4m0 tgtrls(*prv) : SI25232
