In fairness, the RPG Redbook is a little different from other Redbooks... I may be mistaken but originally Redbooks were written by IBMers. This was then opened up to those who were interested in participating. Usually a Redbook is written before the content is generally available (e.g. Configuring and implementing the latest version of whatever). The benefit to a company is that one of their employees is gaining knowledge ahead of the posse.
