I changed it to use the 10I 0 definition, and then implemented suggestion a) that you provided (below): a) do not use %addr() or a pointer for the first parameter! You should code your variable name directly, or if you want to remove blanks, put it inside a %trim() or %trimr(). Do not use %addr or a pointer when you have options(*string) coded. This results in my file being 1k, and it does not contain the leading hex chartacters representing the length of the variable length data. I'm all done with this part of the application. That was the last piece and now I can start testing the full application in its entirety. Thanks again for your help!
