Michael, A couple of things to consider... The precision and decimal places parameters of %DEC are used to define the temporary variable the compiler defines. (per Barbara http://archive.midrange.com/rpg400-l/200412/msg00069.html ) Which means that when %DEC is used on the right hand side of an EVAL, the precision and decimal places specified for %DEC don't have to match the precision and decimal places used by the variable on the left hand side of the EVAL. %DEC works this way so that you can use the results directly in expressions and/or procedure calls. D number72 s 7p 2 D number70 s 7p 0 D charfld s 8a D myfunc pr D parm1 7p 2 /free myfunc(%dec(charfld:7:2)); number72 = %dec(charfld:7:2); number70 = %dec(charfld:7:2); /end-free HTH, Charles Wilt -- iSeries Systems Administrator / Developer Mitsubishi Electric Automotive America ph: 513-573-4343 fax: 513-398-1121

I need the result to have a precision of 2 when pgm is executed one way and then a precision of 0 when ran another way. The compiler doesn't allow you to use a variable name but will allow you to use a defined-constant. The %DEC is being executed multiple times and I was hoping that I could get away with using a varying third parameter so that I wouldn't have wrap around it with an IF statement. Any ideas? Ciao!
