setitimer() may be more efficient on CPU cycles, but the usleep() function does work. IMHO, they serve different purposes. setitimer() doesn't actually pause your program and wait for the time to elapse! Instead, it sends you an alarm signal at regular intervals. That's a fairly large difference in the the way they work -- I can easily see why usleep() would make sense in some circumstances where setitimer() would make sense in others.
