...The primary elements of RPG that > distinguish it from all other languages are (1) its source > format, and (2) The Cycle. You get rid of those, and why in blazes should you still call it RPG?
===> Ha ha, maybe that's why they're thinking about a name change, eh? Ho ho ho. I've been aching for years for a name change from "Report Program Generator"! "What's in a name?" Name recognition! The unititiated "out there" might get "legacy" stuck in their brains for AS400's, "System i" is the latest and greatest! The compiler-writers have introduced forward-compatible adaptations into the language (and the OS) for the changing conditions, needs, and available computer-power, to the benefit of user organizations. These in turn were able to leverage (1)existing investment in code, (2)existing specific-language programming talent, skills, experience (us), (3)existing compiler code base (I assume), (4)the benefit of combining historical function, such as the cycle, with newer functions. That's not bad, but RPG now has the benefit of both sides of the issue... IMHO --Alan
