3) Even if Jon wrote the quote below I think he is wrong for
recommending it. My view is the same as Scott's on this one. Well I did write some of that section - not sure if that precise but was me and I agree it is "wrong" but ... At the time we had encountered a number of problems using errno when calling C functions from within RPG IV code. It appeared that sometimes the errno value that resulted from a previous failed function was not being cleared and was being misdiagnosed as a failure in the current function. (e.g. When doing a read operation, the value of errno might indicate that the open failed!) We consulted the C compiler team who were unable to determine the cause of the errors. Their recommendation at the time was to zero errno prior to the call to the function. Whatever caused the original problem seems to have vanished over the years. Code that exhibited the failure at the time we wrote the book worked just fine on later releases. The book just wasn't updated. Jon Paris Partner400 www.Partner400.com
