Has there been an RPG ballot in the past year? Seems like it has been quite awhile since I last cast one. If the RPG compiler team were to add (or allowed to add) a few language features/changes and implement some new "framework" concepts for native gui applications, I think RPG could become quite the language to behold. It could become so great in fact that it would drive NEW business to the iSeries. Shops would be migrating to RPG from .NET and Java because of the simplicity of UI development and ease of DB access.
From the things I have heard George Farr hint about at RPGWorld I think RPG
_could_ have a nice future ahead of it. Of course a lot will have to do with how they implement the new features - I have hoping it has NOTHING to do with Java as I believe that would slow adoption even more. Implementation details hiding is the key. Look how easy it is to do file access. Need to know what your business keys are and that is about it. Can't get any better than that! (BTW, I am relating RPG file access to the trials of setting up and working with Java's Hibernate). Aaron Bartell http://mowyourlawn.com
