Me, I'd use option 3 and not worry about the compile listing having unreferenced fields. Frankly I feel there are a lot of people too anal about that issue. Also, why base it on a pointer? I know, to not use up memory. But my point is why redefine the fields? Or why do you want to: d dsMODATA ds extname(MODATA) based qualified d whatIWant ds qualified d CITEM like(dsMODATA.CITEM) ... exec sql select citem into :whatIWant.citem from modata where...; instead of simply d dsMODATA ds extname(MODATA) qualified ... exec sql select citem into :dsMODATA.citem from modata where...; Rob Berendt
