We converted those long ago.  Basically we used arrays in the program. The 
trick is that arrays were not allowed on S/36 display files (or DDS ones 
for that matter).  So before displaying the screen there was a lot of 
copying fields from the arrays to the screen variables.

Also, since you did not have subfiles you end up eating a LOT of 
indicators.  For example if you want column A to be highlighted on a row 
only if a certain condition existed then you needed 1 indicator for that 
column for each row. An 8 row "subfile" would eat 8 indicators just for 
column A.  The other option was to write out the screen as one big field 
and bury the hex codes in there for screen control.  Never did it, but 
I've heard of it.  Even heard of a package vendor doing it.
