I'll have to give that a try. I tried DSPPFM but it didn't show on the screen. Ron Power Programmer Information Services City Of St. John's, NL P.O. If so, I *think* that it would work to do this: 1. Update the new file from a text area - make sure to include a newline. (ie. enter 'a<enter>b' or somesuch). 2. Write a quick test RPG to read the new field into a variable. 3. Debug said RPG program, view the field as hex, see how the newline is represented, and copy that hex code. I think this is what I would attempt in your situation, because I don't know if there is any ASCII <-> EBCDIC going on under the covers in such a scenario. FWIW, I found this document on Sun's site http://java.sun.com/docs/books/tutorial/uiswing/components/textarea.html, which links to some details about the class which handles editing for text-entry widgets. It appears that when this class is reading a String into a Textarea, it assumes that the first CR, LF, or CRLF is the line-end character. So, it would seem that you could use the hex code for any of those as the line-end would happen automagically. I don't have any way of testing this, but if that is indeed true I think it's pretty darn cool.
