That might give a different value from %len(getBytes), if there was any
DBCS data involved.  getBytes for a string sDsDDs (where s is SBCS and D
is DBCS) would return soDDisoDDDDis (where o is shift-out, i is
shift-in, DD is the 2 bytes for a DBCS character).  %len(getBytes) would
return 13 and length() would return 6 for that particular String value.

Which one is "correct" depends on why you want the length.
