Alan,

I recently did a similar thing using a user space. As I filled the
subfile I populated the user space. I didn't use page at a time but it
could be adapted. From that point, as the users selected columns to
sort I used the C qsort function to sort the user space and repopulated
the SFL from there. With qsort you have to provide your own comparison
routine so I'm not sure it would meet your dynamic sort requirement if a
multiple column sort is selected at runtime. I can post the code if you
think it might be helpful to inspire thought.

The data queue suggestion could also probably be done with a user index.
I haven't seen it but I'm guessing it's using a keyed data queue. That
brings me back to the dynamic sorting combinations issue. You have to
know the key when the entry is written.

Maybe the first select builds a work file and from there the sorting
takes place on the work file using SQL select with order by? Just
thinking out loud.

I think Booth asked how you would know what columns to sort over. That
might be helpful for us to generate ideas.

Rick

Subject: Even more embedded SQL....
  Hi All,

I have been given a project that requires the need to
display, within a subfile, the data from 2
separate files with the ability to sort that data from any
number of different columns. So I
thought to myself, this smacks of embedded SQL and Dynamic
Sorting Subfiles. The unfortunate
thing is that the data I have to display is over 15,000
records long (and growing) so if anyone
can help me, I am looking for an example of embedded SQL
and Dynamic Sorting Subfiles - Page at
a time (with the ability to position to a particular piece
of data)"
Some title for an article huh? If anyone has an example of
what is required, or could point me
in some direction, I would be very grateful.
