In basic terms, Java has much greater support than you'd ever have with VARPG or any other flavor of RPG. Also, with the Windows based RPG compilers, you're basically stuck with that app requiring some version of Windows to run. I know that VARPG can generate Java bytecode, but that fails to make it portable.....
