Thanks for the advise.  I finally got it after a gillion compile attempts. 
 I had my brain focused that the problems was in the 

(' + %trim(sheetname1) + '!' + %trim(cellname) + '+' +
        %trim(sheetname2) + '!' + %trim(cellname) + '+' +
        %trim(sheetname3) + '!' + %trim(cellname) + '+' +
        %trim(sheetname4) + '!' + %trim(cellname) +
   ')';

part of the equasion.  Duh!  finally it sank in.
