Program described files is the way to go.  Hey this brings back memories 
of
the old S/3 15D.

Joe you hit the bullseye again, you  said 
Works like a charm.  The only thing you would have to do is have THREE 
files
with USROPN; one each with key lengths of 14, 16 and 18.  Open the
appropriate file based on the key length.

Just a small point, one Fspec will do. Just use a Key length of 99 or so.

Obviously field dummy can be moved to whatever data structure you want.
If the records in the file had some sort if ID you could even set up
I specs to map the data into proper fields.
