There is a pause for the user to enter the check date. That could be a problem. I like your idea of immediate update, and then subtract one in case the user cancels out.
Envision this scenario:
User 1
co chain control (gets check 1000)
add 1 check
update control (check is 1001)
exfmt
... go to lunch
User 2
co chain control (gets check 1001)
add 1 check
update control (check is 1002)
exfmt
update detail (check is 1002)
User 1
... back from lunch
... cancels out
co chain control (gets check 1002)
sub 1 check
update control (check is 1001)
User 3
co chain control (gets check 1001)
add 1 check
update control (check is 1002)
exfmt
update detail (check is 1002)
... duplicate check in detail!
