Tommy,

That is incorrect. Changing the key (or in this case adding UNIQUE) will
NOT change the format level ID.

Yes but it will change the level check ID & you'll need to recompile the
programs. If you change the PF via DDS you change the DDS the issue a
CHGPF command & point the file to the changed source.

Alternatively you change use ADDPFCST to make the change as well. Note
the level check ID will still change as mentioned for the DDS.

BTW, just because the file is allocated does not mean that duplicates
can't be created, it just means that only THAT job can add the duplicate
record. Perhaps if you show us your RPG program that does the update to
the file we can help you find the bug...or suggest a work-around....

Thanks,
Tommy Holden

OK but can you make that change to the file once it is already
established?

use the UNIQUE keyword in the DDS

Then in the RPG, the file is accessed, 1 is added to the check num.
and
then the UPDAT is issues. (It is an older program).

I am trying to see where a dup could be done.

Or to put it another way, how would you design such a program in such
a
way that a dup could NEVER happen?

HI I am looking at a situation that occassionaly occurs, that a check
number is allowed to be entered that is a dup.

The CL does an ALCOBJ OBJ((APPCKNO.LNDATA *FILE *EXCLRD)).

There are many file members, actually one for each company.

What about in the RPG is there something that could UNLOCK this file
momentarily and allow for the occurance?

Thanks,
Steve M.
