Thanks for the tip.  Sure is a strange one.  Couldn't quite understand

If you don't want to add a WRITE statement for your printer file, you
can just add a blank P spec to the end of your source to get the
output-only fields recognized.  When the compiler finds a P spec, it
generates O specs for all externally-described records, just in case a
later procedure does a WRITE operation.
