Tom A good question.I did measure it years ago when machines were much slower. It certainly made a difference. Even today, with somewhat faster machines, it is visible. Instead of the whole screen appearing at once, it comes in bits - a format at a time. That doens't necessarily mean that the last bit appears any later than when DFRWRT(*YES) is being used but I suspect that it does and, in any event, if you have, say, four formats on the screen, then, with DFRWRT(*NO), four writes to screen are being done instead of one. This surely must take more CPU time and more coms traffic.
I have used DFRWRT(*YES) since it first appeared many years ago. I believe that this is just one contribution to getting really fast response times in my system.
