I could only imagine that the original poster wanted to build a workfile in batch, like overnight, so that the interactive process can use the workfile. Personally, myself, I wouldn't want to kick off a batch job and then have the interactive job wait for completion of the batch job. I suppose it really doesn't matter except that it may confusing to the next programmer. You can have a batch program watching a data queue, when a request is placed in the data queue by the subfile program the batch program runs the SQL and stuffs the output into another data queue for the subfile program to pick up. You could even have multiple batch jobs running to allow multiple requests to be processed at the same time. It's a nice technique to avoid the "Interactive tax".
