I was assuming that Jon started using his technique before the APIs
became available.

That's what he said, yes. In your response to him, you said that you didn't think it was worth mentioning this possibility, but that if it was, he should include the APIs. My response is that since Jon didn't use the APIs, there's no need to include them.

I didn't check all of them, but I noticed that QleActBndPgm wasn't added
till v5r3.

QleActBndPgm was released in V3R6.

It's only the "long" versions of these APIs that were released in V5R3. (QleActBndPgmLong and QleGetExportLong). The only difference is the activation mark field was upgraded from 32-bits to 64-bits. I guess in a really, really large shop they needed more than 2.1 billion activations??

You could do everything you needed to (and I did) on a V3R6 system. The hardest part was resolving a system pointer to the service program, since the manual doesn't give you any clue of how to do that. You have to use the RSLVSP MI function.

Jon's solution, however, is a much simpler solution to the problem. It's much easier to do (IMHO) than dynamically activating a service program, so I think it's a pretty neat idea.
