Your comment is mostly right. However, there are times when features are allowed back. From the precompiler standpoint, enhancements where the precompiler is finally supporting a feature that has been in the compiler for a while will be allowed to a previous release. For the precompiler enhancements that are because of a new SQL statement or a new compiler feature, those will not be allowed to a previous release. So, you can change your source on v5r4 to have SQL statements in free format and precompile it with TGTRLS(V5R3). The program will run on v5r3. -----Original Message----- From: Jeff Young [mailto:cooljeff913@xxxxxxxxx] Sent: Tuesday, March 21, 2006 10:36 AM To: Midrange Systems Technical Discussion Subject: Re: Compiled Programs Under V5R4 - Work in V5R3? The only way to make the progam backward compatible is to compile with TGTRLS(V5R3). Unfortunatly, this will have the effect of not letting you use any features not supported by the V5R3 compiler .... including Free Format SQL. Please respond to Midrange Systems Technical Discussion nge.com> Hi All, Within the next month we will be taking delivery of a brand new 520E to replace our aging 720 box. I just finished reading an article on IT Jungle that v5r4 will now allow SQL statements in free-form (about time!). Now the question - our old 720 will be demoted to a DRP box. I know that V5R3 will be the highest version of the O/S I can put on this box. My question is if we put V5R4 on the 520 and V5R3 on the 720, will compiled programs still work on V5R3? I'd like to move the code over to the free form SQL, but I will not do it at the cost of having the programs fail on the DRP machine if the time comes that we need to use it. I assume I will not be able to modify code on the 720 box if we move to v5r4, but is that the only limitation? Any opinions would be appreciated. Thanks!
