Tommy, As to part 2 of the question....eval is a replacement operation no clear > is needed prior to the eval. Except that in this case, the %subst() is used on the left side so it only clears those bytes of the result field. So if the field had previously contained longer data, you would have some residual bytes which would not be cleared by the proposed equation. If the field is only used for this operation once, the default (ie previous) contents would be blank and all would be well. Doug
