Thanks Scott and Simon. Yes, I was surprised by the MCH0602 error also. It took me awhile to finally figure out that I need to recompile the caller. I know if I change the param attributes, it will cause problem to the caller. However, I didn't think it method in this particular case because the return value is a varying length char field. Obviously, I'm wrong. It is possible that by increasing the length of the return value you have corrupted storage that then causes this exception when that storage is referenced by another op-code or instruction.
