Would an organization with software that old dump their old box if they 
wanted a new box?

I can see an emigration path that left the old box sitting there while 
applications were migrated to other solutions, eventually being turned 
off, then a year or so later being unplugged, and finally being moved 
out.  A time frame of 4 years would seem typical.
