I some time ago implemented the Helton solution on our site. This catches all 
system errors (MCH1202 etc etc) as well as application messages specifically 
thrown.

After the ON_ERROR we usually send an escape message. This works well.

 

I was just wondering what you meant by 

"on-error catches all message IDs.  In fact, that's the problem with it! 

it doesn't give you a change to specify that some of them are "unhandled",
