I agree on the WDSC list.  However I will reply just to reduce the 
ammunition of the Luddites.

No, this does not happen automatically with WDSC.  However there is an 
option in WDSC to convert to free format and it will do so.  But you do 
have to manually tell it to do so.  It's not even a prompt "Hey buddy, 
would you like me to ..." kind of thing.  Perhaps the person who did so 
doesn't want to admit it.

Your impression of mangled may be because of some op codes not supported 
in /free and it breaking it up like
/free
 z=a+b;
/end-free
C   move x result
/free
 myfield=*zeros;
/end-free
C   move *zeros  thisfld
...
And, in that case, your opinion may be valid.  There's workarounds to 
that, but it normally involves buying someone else's product and not the 
free stuff in WDSC.
