I'm not Booth but I've something to say about you post:

1 - open(), write() and so on are not RPG but external elements. You can
also use OpenXls(), OpenDoc(), OpenXml() if somebody is so nice to write the
interfaces...
2 - In VARPG you can access native (windows) file system via Windows, to
access other types of files you have to use OCX, DDE or APIs.
3 - If you prefer to access various files or file systems you can use other
languages and call the programs from a VARPG application
4 - The basic idea about VARPG is to provide a GUI and a better integration
with the windows world, not to port applications to windows (it's
client/server, not just client). There are many things missing in VARPG that
we take for granted on Iseries and many things missing on Iseries that the
pc world take for granted...
