Yes, do it that way, only don't write those code chunks yourself. Write a tool to do it. To a DSPFFD to an outfile, read the outfile and build a proc/subr for each field.
About the only things to remember is that QRPGLESRC is externally described (use DSPFFD to see yours) and that you need to do an OVRDBF to point to the output member of your choice -- failure to do that will result in the untimely demise of the *FIRST member in QRPGLESRC. I generally use O specs for a tool like this, but some people prefer to map the SRCDTA field in a DS.
