Awhile back I did this in a round about way using the system tables that contain the user defined table definitions. In those tables you will have the definition of all the different columns and datatypes for each table. >From that you should be able to fairly dynamically access a particular row's data. I don't have the source anymore because that was for a previous employer (sorry) :-( Could you expound on what you are trying to do?
