Files are a perfectly fine way of doing this... I have no problem with 
that.  It's just that the OP was asking about data areas.

I didn't want this to go into the archive as "something that's difficult

to do with data areas".  It's very easy to do with data areas, and you 
don't need an API to use them any more than you would need an API to use
a 
file.
